General likes: worldbuilding, mythos, intrigue, redemption arcs, unseen twists, trope reversal/fractured fairytales, AUs, elements of horror/dark themes, loyalties to a greater cause, humor/comedy, queer relationships, unusual storytelling mechanisms, strong female characters. No preference on ratings but I prefer a bit of plot with my porn, if there is any.

Hey Diddle Diddle (Nursery Rhyme)
Any Character

Nursery rhymes that are seeming nonsense are the best to try and turn into something with a coherent narrative. Pick any of the characters you like for following them along the story, either what led them here to this space where there's a cat fiddling, a cow jumping the moon, and a dish and a spoon having a romantic tryst and/or an elopement, or what they did afterward. Or what the party was and how they were all invited to it. Or what's going on with a cat that has a fiddle in the first place. Is he one of the Bremen Town musicians? Does he have a cousin or a littermate who went with boots instead of a fiddle? And if it's Dish and Spoon, does that mean there's also Fork, Knife, and Bowl that have to be accounted for?

All these things are suggestions. The thing we want is for you to write a story you would enjoy. It comes through for the rest of us.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Any Character

I always like to know how the story might play out in different situations. What happens if Gawain accepts Lady Bertilak's offer and then shares with his host, as per the rules of the game? How does the story end and its moral change if Gawain is able to resist even the final temptation from Lady Bertilak? What happens if Gawain does lose his head because all of the rest of this has been little more than a ruse to get a knight to lose his head? What happens if it turns out Gawain has to take up the mantle of being the Green Knight instead?

Or, conversely, what are the conversations like between Sir Bertilak and his wife about this entire affair, including the directive to try and seduce Gawain? Is Bertilak confident Gawain will be able to resist? Does Lady Bertilak suggest this game herself, thinking she either gets to have a knight demonstrate his ability to resist temptation or she gets to have a roll in the sack with one of Arthur's knights? As with many of these stories, there's so many possible other stories that are lurking just off the stage.

Crane's Return of a Favor (Japanese Folk Tale)
Any Character

What was the reason the crane needed secrecy to create the cloth? And furthermore, why was she plucking her own feathers and transforming them? Is there another story before the one where the man rescues the crane?

Elsewhere in our storytelling kit, we have stories where creatures turn themselves human and live with the ones who help them, even after their nature is revealed. Would the story have changed that much if the crane has stayed with the man and they lived together well or possibly had children? Would those children have had interesting powers of their own?

There's also the intervening time where the man has made his promise but is curious about what's behind the screen. Is he the kind of man who believes in his promise, and asks a friend of his to peer behind the screen? Or a curious friend peers behind the screen and says what is going on to the man? He didn't look himself, and his curiosity is satisfied about what happens. Possibly even his friend paints him a lovely picture of it so he can see what's going on. Are these the kind of things that would violate the promise, or are these entirely acceptable ways for the man to see what is going on and not have his promise broken? Would the crane allow this, because she wants to stay with him?

There are a lot of other possible stories that could be wrought here.

All these things are suggestions. The thing we want is for you to write a story you would enjoy. It comes through for the rest of us.

Rumpelstilzchen | Rumpelstiltskin - Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
Any Character

There's a second story here in addition to the one about the name of the man. The king who routinely requires the miller's daughter to keep spinning gold for his own purposes could be someone despised in the kingdom, and over the course of the three nights with the strange man, the Queen may have decided to throw her lot in with those who want to depose her husband. Perhaps the little man and the story of the firstborn child is him offering her the opportunity to abdicate in advance of a revolution. Or she would much rather be a miller's daughter again, now that she has a child, because the king is not the man she wants to raise her daughter.

Or the story as it plays out from Rumpel's perspective, either as an attempt to tempt a girl, and feeling good about the success of the thing, only to have victory snatched away at the last moment, or as a being who heard the call of someone and responded in the way that he needed to, but he's not particularly happy about how this is going, either, and is looking for some way to break the situation just as much as the Miller's Daughter / Queen is.

Rotkäppchen | Little Red Cap - Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
Any Character

It's interesting to see how in this version of the story, Little Red is beset by a second wolf and with her greater knowledge, is not distracted and is able to defeat that wolf with the skills that she has and her granny. One wonders whether it is a regular occurrence that Red is beset by wolves looking to defeat her and/or her grandmother, and whether this is something that her grandmother has been doing as well for a very long time.

The hunter is interesting, as well, since he happens to be there at the right time, and is good enough to get Red and Grandma out of the wolf without waking the wolf up or hurting the two of them. Is he an ordinary hunter, or is there a significant amount of magic in his lineage? Or is he a construct of some sort who is supposed to protect Granny and kill wolves, and so he's always around, or only around when she's in danger? This could absoluely be a story that has other elements to it, or develops the elements that are there to turn them into characters with greater backstories.

All these things are suggestions. The thing we want is for you to write a story you would enjoy. It comes through for the rest of us.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears - Flora Annie Steel
Any Character

The narrator has it in for Goldilocks and her rudeness, but one wonders what kind of situation she would be in to be willing to go into someone else's house, eat their food, rest in their chairs, and sleep in their beds. What kind of home life does she have that this might call to her as some rest and comfort?

The story says that the Bears never saw anything more of her, but I wonder if they saw the evidence of her presences and have to make some decisions about whether what they're going to try and teach the rude girl about kindness and manners by proxy, or whether they're going to feed her and help her get stable and then try to teach her manners and the need to be a more social creature. What's the Bear family meeting like about that, where they're very unhappy that someone has taken advantage of them, but they're trying to figure out how to respond to it?

Or perhaps one of the Bears does see her again, much later on in life, after the girl and the Little Wee Bear has grown up, and the two of them can hash out what happened when she was young, or what restitution was needed, or other such things. There's a lot of possible stories before, around, and after this particular one.

Schneewittchen | Snow White - Jacob and Wilhlem Grimm
Any Character

The Queen's jealousy and fear is extremely consuming, but is there any other reason other than simply wanting to be the most beautiful woman in the land that drives her? She has a magic mirror and magic skills, is there a magic reason why she tries so hard to get rid of Snowdrop? Has she seen herself wearing the iron shoes at the order of the Queen, and thinks the only way she can avoid this fate is by killing the young girl who will be the queen that will order her own death? Is she trying to capture a Prince herself, and is unhappy about the prospect of someone prettier who might steal him away from her?

As for Snowdrop, it must be quite the experience, to have someone who wants to kill her so thoroughly, and who seems to want to stop at nothing to achieve this end, including disguise and magic. All, apparently, because she's a pretty girl. And the dwarves apparently want her to cook, clean, and keep house for her. Did they also want other things from her in addition to her housekeeping skills? And is she such an innocent that they have to teach her about those things they want from her as well?

And what is this Prince doing here, anyway? Just on his way on a quest, did he hear some news about a beautiful girl in a glass coffin, what is it that brings him here and then allows him to fix the curse on Snowdrop, completely by accident? Princes wandering about are always something that can cause issues and stories to pop up into existence, so they have to be accounted for.

All these things are suggestions. The thing we want is for you to write a story you would enjoy. It comes through for the rest of us.

Aschenputtel | Cinderella - Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
Any Character

This particular story can ask for a "what happens afterward" kind of tale between the cinder girl and the prince, now that she's finally been freed from the horrible family memhbers and brought into the Prince's protection. Does she also want her father punished for not helping her or protecting her against the machinations of the stepmother and the stepsisters? Does the Prince want to do it as well? Does the magic of the tree still help her out now that she has a Prince to help? Or will she run away again because the Prince has turned on her?

Or perhaps take a look at things from the perspective of the Prince himself. The story says that the King declares a festival to find the Prince a bride, but what does the Prince think about this? Is he mostly not very happy at all about this, and then gets charmed by the one girl who is both beautifully dressed and completely out of place at the party? Is this a spite decision to chase Aschenputtel? Or does he hope she's some kind of fairy creature that will disappear and never be seen again, so he can spend even more time looking for her and putting off having to actually get a bride?

Does he have other plans for the stepsisters? Does he know they're not the right girl, but he wants to use them to stall and delay and then have to go keep looking again, but the doves keep getting in the way and making him go back immediately instead of being able to use them for all the time until right before the wedding, the perfidy is revealed? The Prince could do a lot of delaying and making it seem like he's just trying to find this specific girl that everyone else saw and then who vanished.

All these things are suggestions. The thing we want is for you to write a story you would enjoy. It comes through for the rest of us.
