I'm so excited for this!

I didn't participate in nominations last year, so quick question - if I have nominations I'm considering which might be borderline as far as eligibility goes, what's the best way (re: mod preferences) to check up on that? Email, comment, just try nominating and see what happens?

All right then!

Well, first I have The Widow and the Devil, a ballad which was apparently written a lot more recently than I had thought! (I had also considered The Queen and the Soldier, but apparently that's also rather contemporary!)

Then there's the story which is variously referred to as "The Velvet Ribbon," "The Green Ribbon,""The Girl With The Green Ribbon," and "The Adventure of the German Student" - I first encountered it as a kiddo in Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, but it has an older and convoluted history. There are a few different versions here, along with speculation that the tale originated with the French Revolution and the guillotine. There's a bit more information about its history and different versions (1984, 1970, 1851?, 1824) here and here.

I have plenty of other (definitely eligible) things I'd be interested in for this event, but I thought these might be fun and worth at least inquiring about! Thank you so much for taking a look (and for the exchange in general).

That makes sense - and thank you for the rec! I'll check that other exchange out.

As far as The Velvet Ribbon goes ... how "official" does the link need to be? (I know a lot of the fairy tales from past years have been hosted at wikipedia or pitt.edu, which are considered relatively authoritative.) The Washington Irving version does exist on Project Gutenberg, but it's not my preference - it's too specific, with a definite location/time period and characterization that doesn't exist in the others that I've come across. That makes it rather less flexible, for retelling purposes.

Most of the more familiar, and more folklore/oral tradition-inflected versions, only seem to be available through blog posts: post #1 has several versions, two of which are attributed; post #2 and post #3 are basically identical, and post #4 is a very short version reporting the basic archetype. I like all four, as far as story goes, but would appreciate mod input!

One question, out of curioustu: how many fandoms will we be able to request for our sign ups (as requests, and as offers)?
