Thank you for your nominations! Please help us sort them - we have some questions about nominations we've received so far.

QUERIES POST ONE

Alice In Wonderland - Lewis Carroll - the Jubjub Bird is nominated under its canonical, Jubjub (Hunting of the Snark). We will approve this as Jubjub (Alice in Wonderland) since the Jubjub is mentioned in Jabberwocky. Nominator, if you'd like a creator to refer to the Hunting of the Snark, you can suggest it to them as an optional extra, but please don't offer or request it unless you're also okay with sticking to Alice in Wonderland material.

Ancient Greek Religion & Lore - this is a broad label, currently including Chiron, Charicio, the Phoenix, and the Sphinx. Are these all found in a single text? Could you specify what source(s) you're interested in, please?

Japanese Archipelago Folk Religion & Lore - this is a broad label, currently including Bake-danuki, Bakeneko, Kitsune, and Tomoe Gozen. Are these all found in a single text? Could you specify what source you're interested in, please?

The Queen - Anna Wahlenberg - apologies; we may have rejected this by accident, but we can't find a public domain source for it. Are you able to help us find a source please?

The Selkie Bride (Folk Tale) - Since there's a wide variety of characters nominated for this tale, could you please confirm what version you're interested in? Our most recent source is a Scottish version: https://tracscotland.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/The-Selkie-Bride.pdf which does not include a farmer or other selkies. (We've also previously approved an Icelandic version. What did you have in mind?

Thanks for your wonderful nominations! We're working through the last approvals and making corrections - please help us polish up this tag set!

Genesis 3 (The Bible) - This nomination contains relationships. Nominator, we're happy to approve the characters Yahweh, Eve, Adam, and The Serpent for you to request, but your author is only guaranteed to match on one character and you aren't guaranteed to receive a ship. Please let us know if you'd like to change your nomination with that information in mind. (Also, do you have a preferred version of the text? Let us know if so! We will approve as the King James version if you have no preference.)

Legends of the Wild Hunt - From the character nominations, it looks like you have a specific text in mind, but we're not sure what that is. Nominator, could you please help us find the text that includes a Wild Hunt Sympathizer and a Village Witch Keeping the Wild Hunt at Bay? Or suggest another version?

Little Red Riding Hood (Fairy Tale) - Nominator, we've already approved the the Brothers Grimm version, Little Red-Cap. If we don't hear from you, we will change the (Fairy Tale) nomination to the the Perrault version. Please let us know if you'd like a different version instead.

Odin Goes to Mimir's Well: His sacrifice for wisdom - Thanks for choosing a clear title that helps us find which part of the myths you're referring to! Would you prefer for the source text to be the Völuspá, or the Prose Edda (which refers to the Völuspá) or something else? Could you also clarify which giant you mean, please? We will also not approve relationships here.

Song of Solomon (The Bible) We are happy to approve a Beloved | Him and a Beloved | Her as characters, but will not approve the relationship tag as well. (Also, do you have a preferred version of the text? Let us know if so! We will approve as the King James version if you have no preference.)

Tam Lin - Anonymous (Song) - While we've approved this with no version information before, there are a lot of different versions. Nominator, do you have a preference? Please let us know if so!

Tom Thumb (Fairy Tale) - Nominator, as far as we can tell, this story does not have Thumbelina in it - that is a separate story. We will approve a nomination, without Thumbelina, based on Perrault, unless you have a different preferred version of the tale.

Thanks for your nominations! Nominations close at 11:59pm CST, Sunday 11 February.

We'd like help with these nominations:

Goldilocks and the Three Bears - nominator, sorry, it's difficult to find a version in the public domain with a similar title and where the protagonist is actually called Goldilocks. In 2023, we approved The Three Bears - Joseph Jacobs - would that work?

Little Red Riding Hood (Fairy Tale) - Nominator, which version are you interested in, please? For example, the Perrault version and the Brothers Grimm version, are quite different. We've already approved the Grimm version. Would you like to add characters to the Grimm version, or would you like the Perrault version, or would you maybe like another version?

The Stolen Child - William Butler Yeats - for 'The Fairy', did you mean the narrator, or the fairy who takes the child's hand near the end, or a different character? We will approve the 'mice' as Brown Mouse - is that okay?

Tam Lin - Anonymous (Song) - While we've approved this with no version information before, there are a lot of different versions. Nominator, do you have a preference? Please let us know if so!

Tom Thumb (Fairy Tale) - this has been nominated with both Tom Thumb and Thumbelina as characters. As far as we can tell, they belong to different stories. Nominator, if you're aware of a text that combines both, could you please supply its link? Please let us know which version of Tom Thumb you had in mind - there are a lot of versions.

Hallo! More queries! If you also know who made the nominations being queried, could you pass this post onto them?

Ancient Egyptian Religion - We're keen to see lore from a variety of traditions, but we will only approve specific texts that are available in the public domain. Please choose a specific text, or texts, for either Bastet or the Sphinx. Note: we will not approve relationship tags.

The Maid on the Shore (Folk Song) - Could you please let us know what version you're thinking of? We're not sure what version has a "brave captain". We also will not approve relationships - specific characters only.

Nursery Rhymes & Songs - We will not approve this as a fandom. Please nominate a specific nursery rhyme. Please only nominate one character in each character slot - this exchange does not use relationship tags.

Sleeping Beauty (Fairy Tale) - this is a story with several different versions. Please pick one. Some past versions we've approved: Charles Perrault, Giambattista Basile version, Brothers Grimm, etc. (Plot differences: Perrault's Sleeping Beauty has an entire second half with an ogre mother in law who wishes to eat her grandchildren, Giambattista's version features a protagonist named Talia who is woken by her newborn twins not a kiss as well as a king instead of a prince, the Grimm version features 13 wise women instead of fairies and ends at the kiss)

Tam Lin (Ballad) - we have already approved Tam Lin (Child Ballad 39I). If you want a different Tam Lin version, please specify that in your nomination. Otherwise, the subsequent nominations will be folded into the version we approved first.

Hi! This is not quite a query, but: We have had several nominations for Tam Lim, and the same character. However, Tam Lin was accepted into the tagset quite a while ago as: Tam Lin (Child Ballad 39I)

The ballad is here! The characters in the set are: Tam Lin, Janet, Janet's Father, and The Queen.

At the end of nominations I will accept all lingering Tam Lins, but I wanted to give a heads up if you nominators wanted to use that slot for another one.

Thanks for your nominations so far! Nominations close at 11:59pm CST, Sunday 29 January.

We have notes on a few nominations, as follows:

Abrahamic Religions - this has been nominated with Chava | Eve | Hawwa' and Lilit | Lilith. As this exchange is for nominations of specific, public-domain texts rather than entire bodies of religion and lore, we would like you to narrow this down, please. Please nominate a specific story in which these characters both appear. In a previous year, we approved Lilith and Adam together under the story of The Alphabet of Ben Sira.

كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة< | Kitaab 'alf layla wa-layla | One Thousand and One Nights - this has the characters Scheherazade and Dinarzade from the framing story, and Ali Baba and Morgiana from one of the stories Scheherazade tells. Please choose one set, or split these out into separate nominations. Stories need to be separate.

Nußknacker und Mausekönig | Nutcracker and the Mouse King - E. T. A. Hoffmann - as well as Marie, who we've approved, this was submitted with the Snow Queen and the Sugarplum Fairy. Neither of these characters appear in the text. Please only nominate characters who appear in this version.

Shurale - Ğabdulla Tuqay - We can't find a version of this publicly available. Please supply one so we can approve this.

The Stolen Child - William Butler Yeats - we will not approve original characters. Please nominate specific characters who appear in the text.

EDIT:

Sleeping Beauty (Fairy Tale) is unfortunately too broad. Please choose a specific version such as Perrault's The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood, the Brothers Grimm's Little Brier-Rose, or another variation.

More nominations welcome! It also helps us if you can find sources for your nominations, or confirm with us that a previous year's source is the correct one.

We're building up a pretty good tag set! Nominations END at 11:59pm CST, Sunday 30th January (see countdown).

Please help us with the following nominations:

New:
Jewish Scripture & Legend - this is nominated with a Dybbuk and a Golem as characters. We're definitely interested in having this in the tag set in some form. Nominator, did you have specific sources in mind for either or both of the legendary creatures? Otherwise we will be using the wikipedia entries.

Little Red Riding Hood (Fairy Tale) - Nominator, which version are you interested in, please? We've previously had the Perrault version and the Brothers Grimm version, for example.

The White Gown (Urban Legend) - We've approved this with the young woman, the mother, and the young man, but the gown itself is also nominated and it's not clear that is a character. Nominator, what did you have in mind?

Previous post:
La Belle et la Bête | Beauty and the Beast (Fairy Tale) - We've separately approved the Joseph Jacobs' version, but there's also a nomination for the AO3 canonical, and we can't tell which version is meant. Nominator, which version do you want? Others that we've previously approved include: the Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont version and the Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve version.

Спящая красавица - Чайковский | The Sleeping Beauty - Tchaikovsky - although this is an adaptation of a fairy tale, this exchange is for works with original written texts in the public domain. Similarly, we have not previously accepted Swan Lake. Sorry - please pick something else.

We have two current nominations we need your help with!

The Gorbals Vampire (Urban Legend) - with characters Jenny with the Iron Teeth and The Children of Glasgow. Could we get some help finding a source for this, please? The issue is there are multiple authoritative (as far as urban legend sites go) sources for the Gorbals Vampire, so we would like to narrow it down to one or two that you, the nominator, are using. Please make sure it includes the bit about Jenny.

We have some new questions and one previous question! Please help us out with these ambiguities. Nominations end on January 31st (see noms post) and the tag set is looking great already.

La Barbe bleue | Bluebeard - Charles Perrault - We've approved this fandom, but we're a little stuck on the character "Bluebeard's Previous Wife (Not Last)". Nominator, could you please go into a bit more detail about what you were thinking?

콩쥐 팥쥐 | Kongjwi and Patjwi | Korean Cinderella (Korean Folktale) - we can't seem to find a full source for this online (just summaries that talk about how it is different from Perrault etc). Nominator, could you help us with that, please? Thank you for including multiple versions of the title and formatting them neatly.

The Fairy and the Woodcutter (Korean Folktale) - We'd also appreciate help with a source for this one, please! We've previously had a related story, The Heavenly Maiden and the Woodcutter, in case you are interested in that version.

Little Red Riding Hood (Fairy Tale) - Nominator, which version are you interested in, please? We've previously had the Perrault version and the Brothers Grimm version, for example.

Thank you for your nominations so far (see noms post)! We have some nominations we'd like more information on - please help us out so we can approve more things.

Alice In Wonderland - Lewis Carroll - with characters Alice, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and the Mad Hatter. We accepted Alice in Wonderland in 2017. However, after discussion, we would prefer not to approve this going forward, as it is a long work that seems closer to the genre of fantasy than fairy tale. Sorry, nominator - please change your nomination to something else by the 31st.

La Belle et la Bête | Beauty and the Beast (Fairy Tale) - there are several different versions, and Beauty often has more than one older sister. Nominator, which version do you want? Some that we've previously approved include: Joseph Jacobs' version; Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont version; Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve version.

Legends of the Wild Hunt - with characters Arawn, Gwynn ap Nudd, and King Herla. The Wild Hunt legends have many variations across cultures, and it looks like you're interested in specific stories - nominator, could you please point us to the specific tale or tales you want?

Sleeping Beauty (Fairy Tale) - there are several different versions. Nominator, which one do you want? We have already approved the Perrault version - do you want your nomination folded into that? Or are you interested in the Giambattista Basile version, or something else?

Hi, everyone! Here's the second round of queries for the nominations (go nominate here!)

Fandom: Abrahamic Religions

Characters:
Adam (Abrahamic Religions)
Chava | Eve | Hawwa' (Abrahamic Religions)
Lilit | Lilith (Abrahamic Religions)

ISSUE: This is too broad. Could you please narrow this down to a specific name or source text you're working from?

Fandom: Ancient Greek Religion & Lore

Characters:
Cerberus (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore)
Demeter (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore)
Hades (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore)
Persephone (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore)

ISSUE: The Hymn to Demeter has already been nominated, with Hades, Demeter, Persephone, and Hecate. Did you want something different? Thought Cerberus is not named in the Hymn, he is referenced in the line "And she [Demeter] was visited by grief [akhos] that was even more terrible than before: it makes you think of the Hound of Hadês," so we would keep him in - but you're welcome to choose another story that gives more information about him.

Fandom: Kojiki (An Account of Ancient Matters)

Characters:
Awashima (Awashima (Nurarihyon no Mago))
Hiruko
Izanagi
Izanami

ISSUE: This is a fascinating looking text but quite large, and it appears to contain many unrelated stories. Could you help us narrow down which part(s) you're using so we know what to link? And if the characters are from more than one story, we'll need you to select a specific one from within this set of texts.

Fandom:Norse Religion & Lore

Characters:
Askr | Ask (Norse Religion & Lore)
Embla (Norse Religion & Lore)

ISSUE: This is too broad. Could you please narrow this down to a specific name or source text you're working from?

Fandom: Swan Lake & Related Fandoms

Characters:
Odette (Swan Lake)
Odile (Swan Lake)

ISSUE: Fandoms for this exchange need to be based on written texts, so unfortunately we will not accept this ballet. Please choose something else.

Hi, everyone! Here's the first round of queries for the nominations (go nominate here!)

Fandom: Arthurian Mythology

Characters:
Arthur Pendragon
Gawain (Arthurian)
Guinevere (Arthurian)
Morgan le Fay

ISSUE: This is too broad. Please choose a specific story and either change your nomination to that or tell us which one it is you want. We'd appreciate a link!!

Fandom: Rapunzel (Fairy Tale)

ISSUE: We know of at least two different main versions you might mean - the Lang version (https://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/lfb/re/refb29.htm) and the Grimm version (https://www.pitt.edu/~dash/grimm012.html). Please let us know what version you want! We'll accept this nomination as the Grimm version if we don't hear back.
morbane: pohutukawa blossom and leaves (Default)
[personal profile] morbane
12 Dancing Princesses (Fairy Tale)

We already have the Grimm version in the tag set. The new nomination includes a Cobbler's Apprentice, the King, the Princes, and the dancing Princesses. It's been suggested that this is the Hesse version, but we can't find the full text of that version online, only mentions of it. Nominator, please help us find a full and legal source for the version you mean, or suggest another version.

La Belle et la Bête | Beauty and the Beast (Fairy Tale)

We already have the Joseph Jacobs version in the tag set. New nominator, which version did you want? The title language doesn't narrow it down - there is more than one French version of the story extant. Does one of these sources work?

Salomé - Oscar Wilde

Although the religion and lore content fits the themes of the exchange, this is a play rather than a story. Please choose something else!

General note

In some cases, we've approved fairy tale titles with a "generic" name (especially if they're canon AO3 tags) because there seems to be a main source with that title - for example, Rotkäppchen | Little Red Riding Hood, where we understand you mean the Grimm brothers version, or ; The Clever Lass (Fairy Tale) (which seems to be the Joseph Jacobs story. If you have a specific version in mind, please make that clear when nominating - the version we find for a source may not be the one you intended.

Nominations close on the 3rd! See countdown.

Hello! Thank you for all the nominations so far!

We've held off approving a nomination for Witch in Jorinde und Joringel - because this character has already been approved in someone else's nomination. While we have no problem with approving this, we wonder if the nominator would like to use that slot for something else?

We have two nominations we'd appreciate help narrowing down!

La Belle et la Bête | Beauty and the Beast (Fairy Tale)

Belle | Beauty (La Belle et la Bête)
La Bête | The Beast (La Belle et la Bête)

Beauty and the Beast has many versions. We would like the nominator for this (and future nominators) to select a specific version, please. A good range of versions is found here.

Norse Religion & Lore

Hel | Hela (Norse Religion & Lore)
Loki (Norse Religion & Lore)
Sif (Norse Religion & Lore)
Þórr | Thor (Norse Religion & Lore)

We'd prefer to approve something narrower, please - either a story or a specific text. Sacred Texts has many sources for Norse Myths that you can use to narrow down this nomination.

Announcement time!

Contains:

  • Nominations in need of clarification
  • Nominations in need of amending before they get rejected
  • That's it!

    • 1. Nominations in need of clarification

      Just one! It's for:

      Fandom: Filipino Mythology

      Character 1: Juan Tamad
      Character 2: Maria Makiling

This is too broad, I need a specific story for them! I found one that contained both over here: http://www.palhbooks.com/arguilla.htm

If you had a different story in mind, please tell me! If you didn't, I'll use this one and leave you to just tell more in your letter about what you're expecting from these two figures.

      2. Nominations in need of amending before they get rejected

      Fandom 1: Into The Woods
Fandom 2: The Princess and the Frog (Disney)

These are ineligible due to being movies and not freely/legally available online stories (they are fairy-tale related though)

I'm going to need whoever nominated those to choose different stories! There's some great resources for finding tales you can use here!

      3. That's it! Everyone's being great!

Hey, everyone!

In this announcement:
  • Nominations that need clarification
  • Tags: What's going on there?
  • Feedback
  • Coming soon(ish)

Okay, first are nominations in need of clarification! Before I get started on this, please know that I myself forgot about the requirement of needing a story for a nomination and had to spend a while searching up Medusa's origin. I found it in Ovid's Metamorphoses.

ALL SORTED

1. Robin Hood! I found a story which contains three of your nominated characters (The Prioress of Kirklees, Robin Hood, Maid Marian) over here, I have been unable to find one containing Clorinda. If you have a story containing her, please tell me of it and I'll approve her tag! If there is none, she'll need to be changed to another character or removed entirely.

2. The Nahua Creation Myth! Could you provide me with the text/name of the story where it is? I need it for the spreadsheet before I approve. If it's not contained in an online story format, please contact me, I have a solution.

3. The Story of the Phoenix. I just need to know which one you mean, thank you.

That's it for now!

Now for Tags: What's going on there?

Well, because an important and advertised part of this exchange is that every source is available for reading, I've had to clarify some of the titles to help specify where the actual source stories are, like some myths are Homeric Hymms.

Unfortunately, this is not a perfect process! I've already put someone's story with the source they don't want once (working to fix that!) and I don't want to do this to people. But thankfully, this is a small exchange and I'm able to change things without a lot of work! So please notify me if I've changed your tag to a story you didn't mean and I'll change it to the proper one.

Thirdly, feedback! This is my first exchange and I'm learning as I go, so if you see something that could be done easier, please tell me. I appreciate the advice.

And lastly, COMING SOON(ish)!

A spreadsheet containing links to all the texts nominated! It'll be up after nominations complete!

This does not mean that if you want to blend several versions (and I will be linking some multiples already) you can't! Please tell your author as much as you can about what you're interested in each story and what you're hoping to explore with it. Optional details are optional, but knowledge is inspirational.

Thus ends announcement #1.
