That makes sense - and thank you for the rec! I'll check that other exchange out.

As far as The Velvet Ribbon goes ... how "official" does the link need to be? (I know a lot of the fairy tales from past years have been hosted at wikipedia or pitt.edu, which are considered relatively authoritative.) The Washington Irving version does exist on Project Gutenberg, but it's not my preference - it's too specific, with a definite location/time period and characterization that doesn't exist in the others that I've come across. That makes it rather less flexible, for retelling purposes.

Most of the more familiar, and more folklore/oral tradition-inflected versions, only seem to be available through blog posts: post #1 has several versions, two of which are attributed; post #2 and post #3 are basically identical, and post #4 is a very short version reporting the basic archetype. I like all four, as far as story goes, but would appreciate mod input!
